Since it was founded in 1992 the Galerie Urs Meile has been internationally engaged in the presentation of contemporary art in the media of painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance. The gallery operates in Lucerne and Beijing and is known as the first European gallery which had started to present Chinese contemporary art in the West.
The Beijing branch is located in Caochangdi Art district, in the same quarter than Chambers fine art, Shanghart, White Space… The gallery initiated an artist-in-residence programme which provides working conditions for international contemporary artists which includes the support of artists in various media, conceptual projects and ideas. Sometimes the gallery hold exhibition of its artists in residence.
The complex designed by Ai Weiwei contains four spacious exhibition rooms within six buildings, and houses the artist-in-residence programme. The working space measures around 200m2 and the living one meets modern standard.
