Dong Dawei has for long wanted to record and exhibit his works’ development. At the occasion of Art Basel Hong Kong in the Insights project, he showed his works on paper along with the process’s video recordings next to each other, allowing the viewer to understand the long and complex process that was hided behind each composition. It’s all about process and timing, drawing every stroke one after another and bringing every stroke together, without no possibility of correction, it’s the same as calligraphy.

This solo show, is like a ‘trial’ where Gao Lei’s artworks become ‘evidences’ linking each other driven by the clues artist sets forward in the exhibition, guiding to a valid or invalided ‘confession’. These clues act as the ‘enzyme’ activating the energies gathered during the formation of the artworks, changing the original context of creation, where finally a new ‘specialistic’ truth is produced as an outcome of catalytic reaction. “Cold Nights” is an exhibition of newly commissioned work by artists Chen Zhou, Liu Shiyuan, Nabuqi, and Li Ran, curated by Boliang Shen and Zhanglun Dai. The curators invited the four artists, after reading the modern Chinese writer Ba Jin’s eponymous 1947 novel, “Cold Nights”, to play the roles of its four protagonists through their own artistic creation.
