Jia Aili’s solo show at Gagosian Los Angeles
Jia Aili presents Seeing Through: Jia Aili’s Parallel Paintings at Gagosian Beverly Hills. This is his first solo exhibition with the gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibition brings together a new series of paintings. Jia combines landscapes, historical images and abstract forms. Different references appear within the same works. Some paintings include transparent Plexiglas placed in front of the canvas. The result is a shifting space where images and marks seem to move between different levels.

Seeing Through: Jia Aili’s Parallel Paintings
With these new works, Jia Aili introduces what he calls “parallel painting.” The idea is simple. The painting is no longer limited to a single flat surface. Different layers exist at the same time. Lines, colours, shapes and images overlap without becoming one single image. Jia also brings together references from different periods and cultures. We can find historical figures, landscapes and fragments inspired by art history. The viewer moves between these different elements. The paintings change as we look at them and make us question how images can exist together.

About Jia Aili
I have followed Jia Aili’s work since his first solo exhibition, The Wasteland, at Platform China in Beijing in 2007. I was working with the gallery at the time and had the opportunity to be involved in the exhibition. His paintings have continued to explore the relationship between memory, history and contemporary life. Jia Aili is one of the important figures of contemporary Chinese painting. His work has been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries across China, Europe and the United States.
