Tao Hui & Li Ming videos works finalists of the Hugo Boss Award for Emerging Asian Artists

Hugo Boss Award for Emerging Asian Artists Exhibition presents the selected works of four finalist artists – Li Ming, Tao Hui, Yu Ji and Robert Zhao Renhui. Among them the video work Hello, Finale! by Tao Hui particularly inspired me. It is a multi-channel video work the artist created specially for the exhibition during a residency in Tokyo.

“The series of nine videos is arranged in an orderly array within the exhibition space. The artist personally composed the script for each story, and finally presents the incomplete, one-way dialogues uttered over the telephone by protagonists who appear on camera. These clips, with their sense of distance and yet familiarity, all eco the sense of finitude, which forms their main theme. ”

Also I really appreciated the way Li Ming’s video installation “Emergency Exit”, occupies the exhibition space and influences the viewer’s sense of perception.

“The artist makes the exhibition space into a space of limited movement, circuitous and nesting, and with a simple procedure. With the work Inspired by Transliteration – Chapter Two: Emergency Exit as the point of departure and as a contradictory loop, the spectator, after entering, can only walk through the entire exhibition hall according to a pre-set trajectory, while the video itself will be presented in turn according to the timeline of this space. “
